Guitar Books & Materials FAQ Sheet

It is our intent to provide information of value to students and teachers of classic guitar. Only materials that have been used, reviewed or recommended by experienced classic guitar teachers will be included in our web list. We do not accept advertising, so that our choices and comments may be free of secondary benefit. Suggestions of materials for our consideration may be emailed to us at Contact4guitar@aol.com. We recognize and respect the differences of opinion shared by teachers of equal dedication to their work with students. However, www.iteachGuitar.com reserves the exclusive right to select materials for this listing on this site.

Why make a list when there are good music stores that carry print music?
Stores that carry a comprehensive inventory of classic guitar materials are rare, and generally confined to larger cities. This site intends to provide information and a source to the many teachers and students in areas without this opportunity.

Why make a list when I can do a web search for guitar books?
That’s precisely the reason for this list. Amazon.com alone lists over 3000 guitar books, with no satisfactory search mechanism for books of specialized focus for learning classic guitar. (For example, a search for “classic guitar” would not turn up one of the most popular and worthwhile books on technique, Pumping Nylon, by Scott Tennant, because neither of the 2 words “classic guitar” are in the title.) We don’t even want to guess at what a general web search would turn up!

What kind of books does this site include in its list?
The books and materials listed on this site are specific to the study of classic guitar. Although Guitar QuickStart™ introduces music reading, chords and simple tablature, the follow-up recommended here is oriented toward classic (fingered) technique, nylon-string classic instruments, and comprehensive fretboard reading. Our list is slanted toward standard, basic methods and repertoire suitable for the earlier years of classic guitar study, and a few of the general repertoire classics. Classic guitar books that include tablature will generally NOT be recommended, as tablature limits the fretboard and fingering choices too severely, and we do not consider that to be the best training for the serious student. Any exceptions (such as flamenco materials that include tablature) will be noted in the comments. The goal is to provide information on proven, recommended materials, or newer ones that are well written and clearly designed. We will NOT attempt to present a comprehensive list of all classic guitar methods or advanced repertoire.

How do I know if these books are worthwhile? After all there are literally thousands of books and pieces for guitar?
Nothing is included on this site unless it has been used or reviewed personally. Brief comments regarding each item are based on first hand knowledge of the material.

Can I buy books from this site?
Not directly, but some of the materials are linked to sites where they may be purchased, especially amazon.com. We will list any item considered of value to beginner-through-intermediate levels of classic guitar training, whether it may be purchased on the web or not. Such items may be obtained through your local music store, or through specialty catalogs. This site realizes a small amount of income from the links to amazon.com, if the link produces a purchase. This revenue is used to defray the costs of maintaining the site.
